The cooperative operates full service offices at the following locations: Centre (Hwy. 68 Bypass) and Sand Mountain (located in Aroney on DeKalb County Road 479). A payment drop box is located at Knighten's Crossroads inside Doug's Grocery (intersection of Calhoun County Road 19 and U.S. Highway 278).

Cherokee Electric is a non-profit electric cooperative. Since 1938, its members have gathered annually to discuss the business of the cooperative. The cooperative's annual meeting is held in April or May.

Members will be notified of each annual meeting at least 10 days before it is held. It is important that you attend those meetings and participate in the elections of board members and other cooperative business.

Bimonthly you will receive by mail the Alabama Living magazine. This magazine contains topics of interest to all rural electric consumers, including policy changes, energy conservation, electric rates, new programs offered by your cooperative and more.

It is standard practice for a utility to require a deposit before providing service. However, Cherokee Electric believes good credit should be rewarded. Deposit fees range from $150 to $300.

Refundable Charges

  • Membership Fee - $5.00 This fee is required prior to the time service is supplied to the consumer, and is not transferable. Upon termination of service, the membership fee may be applied against any unpaid bills of the consumer. Any remaining balance will be returned to the consumer.
  • Consumer (Security) Deposit
    A deposit is required before electric service is supplied to insure prompt payment of bills.
    Residential - minimum of $150.00
    Commercial - minimum of $300.00 or estimated 2 month's usage (whichever is greater)
    Industrial - Determined by contract

Non- Refundable Charges

  • Connect Fee $30.00
  • Minimum bill
    Residential - $17.50 (plus tax)
    Non-residential - $30.70 (plus tax)
    Large Commercial/Industrial - Determined by contract
  • Service Charge/Administrative Fee - $30.00
  • Late Payment Penalty 5% of bill for the first $5,000, then 1% thereafter.
  • Seasonal Reconnect Fee $100.00
  • Transfer Fee $30.00
  • Past Due Collection Fee 
    Diconnect order printed - $10.00
    Disconnect trip fee - $15.00
  • Reconnection Trip Fee for non-payment
    If requested between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. M-F - $55.00
    After 3:30 p.m. and weekends/holidays - $150.00
  • Temporary Electric Service
    Pole Rental $30.00 per month plus usage
    Carnivals, Tent Revivals, Etc. - Estimated cost in & out
  • Aid to Construction
    Temporary Mobile Home, Camper & Other Temporary Services
    Service only (no additional poles required) $100.00
    Service & Secondary Slack Span (Service + 1 pole) $250.00
    Carnivals, Tent Revivals, Etc. - Estimated cost in & out
  • Underground Service

    To change existing overhead service - Total cost of construction
  • Security Lights 
    Install New
              Owner Occupied - $50.00
              Rental Property - $50.00
              Cost per month/per pole, if needed - $3.00
    Turn on Existing - No Charge
    Commercial - Same as above plus any make ready cost
    Monthly fee $6.58
  • Lightning Arresters $25.00
  • Outage Complaint call resulting in consumer problem
    If between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. M-F $30.00
    All other times $50.00
  • Returned Check Fee $30.00
  • Meter Test (if meter is accurate within +/- 2%) $25.00
  • Relocation of Service - Total cost or no charge if upgrade and
    additional load
  • Cut Seal/Theft of Service
    Unauthorized cut seal $100.00
    Meter tampering/Theft of services $150.00
    (plus charge of actual kWhs used)
